DJ Mehdi

Person·France·1977–2011·electronic/electro/hip hop

DJ Mehdi was a visionary French producer who bridged hip hop and electronic music with irresistible groove and playful invention.

Emerging from the late 1990s Parisian scene, he forged a distinctive sound that fused crisp electro beats, filtered disco house, and exuberant breakdance energy, best heard on tracks like Signature, Pocket Piano and the Chromeo collaboration I Am Somebody. A key member of the Ed Banger collective alongside Pedro Winter, he collaborated with Cassius, MC Solaar, Daft Punk and Chromeo while carving out his own forward-thinking path. Where French hip hop often leaned thuggish, Mehdi injected up-tempo club euphoria and sophisticated sampling drawn from sources as diverse as Fifth Dimension soul and flamenco guitar. His 2006 debut Lucky Boy for Ed Banger remains a gleaming milestone that stabilized the label’s reputation beyond its more abrasive peers. A decade after his death, the posthumous MPC 2021 with Busy P, Santigold and Benjamin Epps reaffirmed his lasting role as the vital link between hip hop and house cultures in France and beyond.
