Bullion

Person·United Kingdom·electronic/pop/experimental

Nathan Jenkins, the British songwriter and producer known as Bullion, crafts "mutant pop" that transmutes bedroom sample collages into contemplative electro-pop gems.

Emerging from 2007's J Dilla-infused mash-up of Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, his early work echoed Double Dee & Steinski's cut-up wizardry on You Drive Me to Plastic, blending Klaus Nomi clips with Italo-disco grooves and haunted Laurie Anderson vocals. By his 2016 debut Loop the Loop, live instrumentation and guests like Sampha channeled Robert Wyatt's eccentric introspection and John Martyn's synth-tinged ballads, yielding timeless, analogue-warm singles. Bullion's sound (woozy leftfield vignettes of the mundane, laced with reverb-drenched guitars, subtle synths, and sly repetitions) positions him amid sophisti-pop revivalists, stripping indulgence to pithy three-minute reveries on albums like Affection. Collaborations with Carly Rae Jepsen and Panda Bear underscore his ear for emotional afterglow, turning everyday echoes into sublime, déjà vu-haunted hooks.
